About this role

Wordsmith is hiring a full-time Legal Engineer to join their in-person team based in Edinburgh. This mid-to-senior role suits an experienced privacy lawyer or compliance specialist eager to build out a brand-new privacy and compliance product vertical from scratch.

Role Overview

As a Legal Engineer specialising in Privacy and Compliance, the focus is on creating innovative product solutions for customers, participating in pre-sales activities, and developing global AI tools. Operating from the Edinburgh office as a default, the professional in this role will work closely alongside Sales, Product, and Engineering teams. The position offers complete autonomy to scope problems, construct solutions, and interact directly with clients without oversight.

Key Responsibilities

Translate complex and unstructured privacy, compliance, and legal requirements into clear, workable solutions that AI agents can execute.
Take full ownership of shaping the privacy and compliance product vertical as a brand-new component of the platform.
Engage directly with customers in pre-sales and post-sales settings to understand their challenges and demonstrate tailored solutions.
Apply knowledge of privacy law, AI governance, financial services compliance, or employment law to address practical customer problems.
Expand into broader legal product development when operational needs require focus beyond core privacy and compliance tasks.
Build solutions utilising Wordsmith's platform with a hands-on understanding of current AI capabilities.

Requirements

Deep knowledge of privacy and compliance, backed by a strong command of privacy law, AI governance, security, or specific fields like financial regulation or employment law.
Background either as a qualified lawyer or a dedicated privacy and compliance specialist with substantial depth in the domain.
Strong AI literacy with a clear comprehension of what current artificial intelligence tools can and cannot achieve.
A proactive builder's mindset capable of turning messy regulatory frameworks into structured workflows.
Confident client-facing communication skills for direct customer interactions.
Mid-to-senior level experience in privacy law or compliance practice with the ability to operate independently.

Nice to Have

Background in SaaS environments, legal technology, or RegTech.
Familiarity with security frameworks such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001, or AI governance regimes like the EU AI Act.
Exposure to wider legal practice areas outside of compliance and privacy.
Practical experience with low-code tools, workflow automation, or prompt design.

Skills and Tools

AI literacy and workflow building without traditional coding
Privacy law and compliance practice
Client communication and pre-sales engagement
Regulatory framework application
