About this role

May Mobility seeks a skilled professional for the Lead ML/Perception Engineer position operating remotely within the USA. This remote role is ideal for an experienced roboticist who wants to shape the future of autonomous transit and vehicle safety systems.

Role Overview

May Mobility is expanding its national footprint of autonomous shuttle networks and requires a hands-on Lead ML/Perception Engineer to oversee the technical direction of vehicle vision and interpretation. In this position, the engineer will manage scene detection advancements, harden the perception stack against adverse weather conditions, and lead major architectural updates to establish a production-grade autonomous foundation. The individual will work independently alongside cross-functional teams, set technical standards, and mentor fellow engineering staff.

Key Responsibilities

Create software and system requirements through independent work with cross-functional teams.
Direct major architectural updates to the perception stack, focusing on modularization, system-level design, latency reduction, and fleet scalability.
Build and own runtime activation logic and scene detection capabilities to classify operational scenes and trigger correct perception behaviors.
Boost perception reliability under poor weather and sensor degradation, establishing health monitoring, sensor fault detection, and fallback safety strategies.
Produce high-quality, industrial-grade production code for state-of-the-art perception features.
Integrate multi-modal foundation models, such as LLMs and VLMs, to elevate semantic reasoning and scene understanding.
Monitor and trend field technical performance while leading issue diagnosis, design, code reviews, and comprehensive release testing.
Guide development concerning machine learning and data pipelines, emphasizing multi-modal data alignment.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional industry experience building real-world robotic systems with industrial-grade code.
Master degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Computer Engineering, or a relevant mathematical or engineering discipline.
Proven track record of leading or making critical architectural decisions for an autonomy, robotics, or perception software stack.
Proficient programming background in Python, C, and C++ within Linux environments.
Extensive background in machine learning and deep learning development using TensorFlow or PyTorch.
Direct experience fine-tuning or developing large-scale multi-modal models like multi-sensor fusion models and VLM backbones for perception.
Real-time expertise in areas such as computer vision, multi-target tracking, sensor fusion, and semantic scene understanding.

Nice to Have

Practical background in developing all-weather perception, sensor degradation modeling, and graceful degradation strategies.
Experience re-architecting legacy perception systems into modern frameworks and utilizing large-scale multi-modal models for edge-case detection.
Familiarity with synthetic data, reinforcement learning, and optimization of machine learning models on compute-constrained edge hardware.
