About this role

May Mobility is hiring a remote Lead Machine Learning Engineer specializing in Localization to architect next-generation autonomous vehicle mapping and spatial intelligence. This role suits an experienced machine learning professional eager to shape the future of autonomous transit from anywhere in the United States.

Role Overview

The Autonomy Mapping and Localization group builds semantic and topological mapping, state estimation, and spatial intelligence that allows autonomous vehicles to understand their surroundings. As the Lead Machine Learning Engineer for Localization, the chosen candidate will architect production-grade feature extraction and state estimation capabilities. The work centers on building systems that enable autonomous vehicles to navigate challenging roads safely at scale.

Key Responsibilities

Architect and drive the technical roadmap for a production-grade localization machine learning stack, including map and sparse landmark-based localization optimized for real-time performance.
Lead the research, design, training, and validation of advanced neural architectures covering object detection, classification, segmentation, tracking, depth estimation, and 3D reconstruction.
Own the end-to-end data strategy for localization feature extraction, defining data curation, auto-labeling, synthetic data, and active learning pipelines.
Develop robust evaluation frameworks and metrics for localization performance, measuring feature extraction accuracy, temporal consistency, and system reliability.
Define and validate failure mode and degradation criteria for localization features across diverse Operational Design Domains.
Evaluate, adapt, and integrate frontier techniques like multimodal localization and foundation models into production-ready solutions.
Drive cross-functional alignment by translating complex autonomy goals into clear software and system requirements.

Requirements

Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
7+ years of professional industry experience developing and deploying machine learning or deep learning models for computer vision or localization at scale.
Deep expertise in computer vision foundations, vectorized landmark and feature detection networks, BEV-based scene representation, and temporal modeling.
Strong background in self-supervised learning, open-vocabulary detection, vision foundation models, and feature extraction from imagery, LiDAR, or radar.
Extensive experience using PyTorch or TensorFlow alongside synthetic data generation, large dataset handling, and active learning strategies.
Advanced programming skills in Python and/or C++ with a focus on modular software design and Linux-based development.
Proven expertise in machine learning optimization for real-time products with limited compute, such as model quantization and pruning.
Demonstrated leadership experience in developing technical roadmaps, mentoring engineers, and driving system reliability.

Nice to Have

10+ years of experience working in machine learning or deep learning for autonomous driving or advanced driver-assistance systems.
Experience utilizing Vision-Language Models or foundation models for auto-labeling and long-tail edge-case detection.
Working knowledge of localization and state estimation concepts including SLAM and sensor fusion.
A proven record of inventions or publication history at top-tier conferences such as CVPR, NeurIPS, ICCV, ECCV, or ICLR.
