About this role

Role Overview

The Lead Machine Learning Scientist position at Monzo is an opportunity to shape the next generation of business banking experiences using advanced AI and machine learning. Based in London, Cardiff, or remotely across the United Kingdom, this role suits an experienced technical leader and hands-on practitioner who wants to simplify financial admin for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Key Responsibilities

As one of the first machine learning scientists within the business banking team, the individual takes ownership of building and shipping models that power intelligent product features. Responsibilities include developing advanced machine learning solutions on a cloud-native data platform and collaborating with product, engineering, design, and data science teams. The role requires deciding when to deploy machine learning, generative AI, or simpler methodologies, alongside designing robust monitoring frameworks to track performance in production. The professional leads the design of batch and near-real-time models, such as time-series forecasting, predictive models, and language model-driven experiences, while setting high technical standards and mentoring colleagues.

Requirements

Candidates need a multiple-year track record of excellence in leading the development and deployment of advanced machine learning models to production. Applicants must demonstrate a self-starter mindset, impact-driven focus, and the ability to navigate ambiguity. The position requires fluency in Python, extensive hands-on experience with scikit-learn, and comfort using SQL with a willingness to learn Go. Strong communication skills are essential to explain complex artificial intelligence concepts to non-technical stakeholders and to build responsible, transparent solutions in a financial setting.

Nice to Have

Background in working on personalisation, ranking, recommendation, forecasting, classification, or decisioning problems for customer-facing applications.
Experience developing machine learning systems for fintech, banking, accounting, payments, lending, invoicing, cash flow, tax, risk, or business software.
Familiarity with generative AI, large language models, agentic workflows, retrieval systems, evaluation frameworks, or human-in-the-loop product designs.
Commercial experience writing critical production code and working with microservices.
Experience designing experiments, A/B tests, or other approaches to measure customer and product impact.
Experience operating in regulated environments or with applications requiring strict explainability, auditability, and customer trust.
