Role Overview

BJAK is hiring a Lead Engineer for an AI-Native Email App position based in the United Kingdom. This hybrid position requires working from the local office at least three days per week, with the remainder available for remote work. The successful candidate will take technical ownership of complex systems, design scalable architecture, and maintain hands-on involvement through coding and code reviews.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the technical design and execution of major products, features, and engineering initiatives.
Design scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems across backend, frontend, APIs, databases, and infrastructure.
Stay hands-on with engineering through coding, prototyping, code reviews, debugging, and production problem-solving.
Make architecture decisions and technical trade-offs balancing speed, scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
Break ambiguous product and technical problems into clear engineering solutions and execution plans.
Set a high standard for code quality, system design, testing, security, observability, and production reliability.
Review technical designs and code from other team members and provide actionable feedback.
Mentor engineers to strengthen technical capabilities across the organization.
Identify technical risks, bottlenecks, and architectural weaknesses early.
Collaborate closely with engineering, product, design, and AI teams to ship products quickly.
Improve engineering tooling, development practices, and automation to raise team velocity.
Own systems post-release by monitoring production, investigating incidents, and resolving root causes.

Requirements

Strong software engineering background with significant experience building and shipping production systems.
Deep technical expertise in one or more areas such as backend, frontend, distributed systems, APIs, databases, or cloud infrastructure.
Strong system design and architecture skills for complex or high-scale systems.
Demonstrated coding ability and a willingness to remain hands-on.
Proven experience leading major engineering projects or providing technical leadership.
Comfortable reviewing code, debugging complex issues, and working directly with production systems.
Ability to explain complex technical decisions clearly and influence cross-functional teams.
Strong product sense linking technical choices to customer and business outcomes.
Ability to work under ambiguity and take ownership from problem definition through production.
Good judgment regarding velocity, simplification, and deep technical investments.
Strong English communication skills.
