About this role
Appian Engineering builds the foundational layers and AI automation capabilities that power enterprise-grade processes for large organizations. The developer tooling team creates IDE integrations, command-line interfaces, code-analysis utilities, and continuous integration workflows that internal engineers rely on daily. Appian Corporation seeks a senior engineer to serve as a technical linchpin for this group, designing sophisticated developer experiences and embedding artificial intelligence directly into daily coding workflows.
Incoming engineers will architect clean software, manage system reliability, and guide teammates on software craftsmanship and the use of AI coding assistants. Candidates who combine deep backend or developer-experience engineering expertise with a practical understanding of production reliability, telemetry, and enterprise constraints will thrive in this environment. This remote position offers a chance to shape engineering practices while building mission-critical services for a global platform.
What you will do
- Architect, build, and optimize developer-facing tools and services while maintaining a strong personal technical presence on the team.
- Design and build the integrated development environments, command-line interfaces, code-analysis, and continuous integration tooling that internal engineers use every day.
- Use artificial intelligence coding tools as a force multiplier to generate, review, and evaluate code for faster delivery without sacrificing correctness.
- Expose AI capabilities through developer workflows that remain fast, understandable, debuggable, and easy to control.
- Manage the availability, latency, and efficiency of developer tooling through advanced system tuning and deep reliability engineering.
- Radiate development best practices across the department, perform meticulous code reviews, and build automation frameworks to prevent problem recurrence.
- Coach, mentor, and guide junior engineers on software craftsmanship to accelerate their technical proficiency.
What you need
- Hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
- Bring at least 7 years of relevant software development experience with a bachelor's degree, or 5 years of experience accompanied by a Master of Science.
