Highlight AI is seeking a Head of AI Engineering to lead machine learning and artificial intelligence initiatives at the San Francisco office. This hands-on leadership role is designed for an experienced technical expert who wants to build the engine powering a shared intelligence layer for modern teams.

Role Overview

As the Head of AI, the chosen candidate will lead and scale machine learning and artificial intelligence efforts for Highlight AI in San Francisco. This position requires five days a week on-site in the office and involves a mix of direct coding, technical direction, and team mentorship. Working alongside backend and product teams, the leader will own the architecture, quality, and roadmap for context ingestion, modeling, and retrieval.

Key Responsibilities

Architect and build end-to-end memory systems and context graphs, covering data ingestion, modeling, retrieval, and evaluations.
Research, prototype, and deploy state-of-the-art machine learning text and OCR models, including transformers, computer vision, time series forecasting, and reinforcement learning.
Manage the complete machine learning project lifecycle from data pipelines and training to deployment, monitoring, scalability, and A/B testing.
Drive industry-leading acceptance rates for output quality across chat, actions, and workflows.
Build, recruit, and lead a high-performing machine learning engineering team while establishing company-wide artificial intelligence and machine learning best practices.
Investigate knowledge representation, continual learning, and retrieval to turn complex insights into magical user experiences.

Requirements

Bring seven or more years of professional experience in machine learning or artificial intelligence engineering.
Demonstrate at least three years of experience leading engineering teams or driving major technical initiatives.
Hold a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Applied Math, Statistics, or equivalent practical experience.
Show published research or a proven track record of shipping production systems in knowledge graphs, retrieval, memory systems, or continual learning.
Possess background experience working at top artificial intelligence labs or leading application companies.
Demonstrate strong architectural skills with a history of designing and scaling machine learning infrastructure from scratch.
Maintain availability to work on-site five days a week at the San Francisco office.
