About this role

Mistral AI is hiring an Engineering Team Lead, Sandbox for a full-time position based in Paris with remote work options. This people-leadership role requires splitting time between managing a growing engineering team and working hands-on with complex architecture and code.

Role Overview

The Engineering Team Lead, Sandbox will guide the squad responsible for secure, isolated, and network-controlled environments designed specifically for AI agents and reinforcement-learning workloads. This position involves spending roughly half of the time on people management—including hiring, coaching, and performance reviews—and the other half on architectural decisions and technical problem-solving. The team builds the foundational runtime layer that allows thousands of concurrent environments to be created and destroyed rapidly while maintaining strict security boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain the isolation layer using microVMs, containers, namespaces, cgroups, seccomp, and snapshot or restore mechanisms.
Own the security boundary to ensure safe execution of untrusted code for customers.
Scale systems to handle large fleets, focusing on creation latency, density, and lifecycle management for thousands of concurrent environments.
Write Go code alongside team members and lead architecture and difficult implementation decisions.
Mentor and grow engineers, establishing strong standards for ownership.
Handle all people management responsibilities, such as hiring, performance tracking, career growth paths, and delivering constructive feedback.
Collaborate with Product Managers to translate frontier research requirements into shippable primitives.

Requirements

At least 2 years of direct people leadership experience managing, hiring, and coaching engineers.
Minimum of 8 years of experience building backend or infrastructure systems.
Deep expertise in Linux internals, including namespaces, cgroups, seccomp, and virtualization technologies like Firecracker-class microVMs.
Proven track record of shipping production systems in Go.
Strong understanding of network isolation at the packet level beyond standard firewall rules.
Solid performance instincts regarding syscall costs and profiling.
Experience collaborating with product, design, and business teams to deliver software to real users.
A low-ego, team-first mentality.
