About this role

Nourish is seeking a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead operations engineering for its AI-native digital health system in New York, NY or San Francisco, CA. This full-time leadership role is ideal for an experienced technical leader energized by building technology and operating systems that support thousands of clinicians and nationwide patients.

Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead a high-performing team of engineers building the technology behind one of the largest healthcare operations in the country. You will help reimagine AI- and technology-native healthcare operations by scaling automation and streamlining complex workflows like billing, claims, and scheduling. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, you will balance people leadership with technical depth, staying hands-on through architecture, pair programming, and code reviews while collaborating closely with product, design, business operations, finance, and clinical teams.

Key Responsibilities

Build, lead, and develop a team of 4–6 engineers with strong technical ownership.
Coach engineers through regular feedback, career development, performance management, and calibration.
Scale the team through recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding.
Stay hands-on through architecture, pair programming, coding, code reviews, and participation in on-call rotations.
Partner with product and design to write requirements, shape roadmaps, scope work, plan sprints, and deliver measurable outcomes.
Drive thoughtful decisions regarding system design, code quality, observability, reliability, and scalability.
Establish effective team rituals such as sprint planning, OKR planning and reporting, quarterly planning, and retrospectives.
Automate manual workflows and design exception-handling systems that increase operational leverage without sacrificing accuracy or patient trust.
Simplify billing, claims, eligibility, scheduling, and other complex healthcare workflows for patients, clinicians, and internal operators.
Build reliable, auditable systems capable of safely scaling through rapid growth and regulatory complexity.

Requirements

6+ years of professional software engineering experience with modern full-stack technologies.
2+ years of hands-on engineering management experience.
Demonstrated background in hiring engineers and managing performance, promotions, and career development.
Technical capability to pair program with team members and contribute directly to codebases when needed.
Exceptional product judgment, including the ability to write a PRD, critique or mock a design, size an opportunity, and make progress independently.
Proficiency with modern stacks including React, TypeScript, Node.js, and PostgreSQL.
Experience shipping and owning production systems in fast-moving, ambiguous environments.
Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Nice to Have
