About this role

Engineers who thrive on helping others grow, take ownership, and build software they can take pride in will find a natural home leading the marimo team at CoreWeave. The group builds marimo, an open-source reactive computational notebook for Python, alongside extension packages and molab, a rapidly growing cloud-hosted notebook service. Leadership for the role involves guiding engineering execution, release cadence, software quality, and responsiveness to users across both open-source ecosystems and cloud services. The position exists to scale the team, shape technical direction, and establish marimo as an industry standard while mentoring engineers through career growth and daily execution.

Day-to-day work centers on managing engineers, providing regular feedback, and partnering closely on architecture, API design, and production reliability. Success in the role requires balancing community feature requests with long-term maintainability, improving productivity pipelines, and driving cross-functional collaboration. Candidates who enjoy connecting with users and contributors while balancing technical tradeoffs across complex distributed systems will do exceptionally well here.

What you will do

  • Lead engineering execution across marimo's open-source ecosystem and molab, including project staffing, technical planning, dependency management, and release delivery.
  • Manage and mentor engineers to support their career development, strengthen their technical judgment, and assist with hiring and onboarding.
  • Shape architecture and technical direction with engineers by reviewing designs and guiding tradeoffs among maintainability, correctness, performance, and development speed.
  • Evaluate community feature requests while balancing user needs, long-term maintainability, and product principles.
  • Lead improvements to engineering productivity and software quality, encompassing automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, code review, and release processes.
  • Establish clear ownership and practices for molab's production reliability, including observability, incident response, and capacity planning.

What you need

  • Bring five or more years of software engineering experience to the position.
  • Demonstrate at least two years of engineering management experience leading senior engineers and technical leads.
  • Possess proficiency in Python alongside strong fundamentals that remain language agnostic.
  • Contribute prior experience working on open-source projects.
  • Have the technical depth required to lead design and architecture reviews while evaluating tradeoffs involving APIs, scalability, security, and reliability.
  • Show documented history of improving engineering practices like automated testing, CI/CD, and code review.
  • Demonstrate experience owning production services end to end, covering performance under load, availability targets, and incident response.

Nice to have

  • Experience maintaining and growing a widely used open-source project
  • Experience building developer tools for AI, ML, or data
  • Familiarity with observability platforms, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD practices
  • Experience using AI to accelerate engineering processes
