About this role

Pliant seeks an Engineering Manager for Developer Experience to establish and lead a brand-new platform engineering team focused on creating seamless workflows. This remote opportunity across the EU and UK is ideal for an experienced technical leader who enjoys building teams from the ground up and combining hands-on coding with strategic management.

Role Overview

As the founding hire for the Developer Experience team, this position ensures every engineer is productive on day one and autonomous on day two. The role requires defining golden paths, managing CI/CD integrations, enabling self-service environment provisioning, and establishing a Service Registry for Kubernetes. Initially, the manager will code alongside the team, review designs, and make architectural decisions while scaling the department.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain deployment templates, opinionated CI/CD patterns, and onboarding flows that take a service to production without a support ticket.
Track and improve internal developer satisfaction metrics, adoption rates, and deployment lead times.
Lead the creation of the company's AI harness to standardise assisted development tools like Claude Code and Cursor across the organisation.
Build the team from zero by managing hiring, establishing culture, and setting high technical standards.
Guide the ongoing migration from ECS to Kubernetes and assist product teams with troubleshooting JVM and configuration challenges.

Requirements

4+ years of software development experience working with Python, supported by 2+ years in a leadership or management capacity.
Strong hands-on background building CI/CD systems, internal developer portals, or golden paths, with familiarity reading Helm charts, writing admission webhooks, and debugging GitHub Actions.
Deep practical knowledge of Kubernetes-based platforms, including cluster APIs, namespaces, RBAC, and deployment patterns.
A product mindset focused on internal tooling to ensure developers choose the platform over workarounds.
Prior experience hiring software engineers and building teams from scratch.
Security-first mindset with practical application of shift-left principles.
