Role Overview

Deepgram seeks a remote Director of Research to take full ownership of the Text-to-Speech program across the USA. This hands-on leadership position suits an experienced technical expert who wants to define the research strategy, guide architectural bets, and drive innovative speech-generation models into production.

Key Responsibilities

Define and lead the end-to-end TTS research and model roadmap, deciding which technical directions will materially improve speech-generation quality.
Drive advancements across neural audio modeling, prosody and expressiveness, controllability, multilingual speech, voice identity and consistency, data and training strategy, post-training, and inference performance.
Remain deeply technical by reviewing research, challenging assumptions, designing experiments, diagnosing model failures, and solving high-leverage problems directly.
Build automated metrics and human perceptual assessments for evaluation and benchmarking.
Hire, develop, and lead a team of individual contributors and tech lead managers while maintaining an exceptionally high technical bar.
Partner closely with engineering and product leadership on ship-readiness and represent Deepgram's TTS research both internally and externally.

Requirements

Deep expertise in modern text-to-speech, speech generation, or audio generative modeling, supported by a track record of personally training and improving large-scale neural models.
Comprehensive command of the modern speech-generation stack and the open problems associated with naturalness, expressiveness, controllability, robustness, voice consistency, and inference cost.
Proven history of setting research direction under genuine uncertainty, prioritizing experiments, allocating compute and researcher time, and stopping ineffective approaches.
Experience leading researchers and research engineers through other technical leaders while staying technically influential.
AI as the default mode of work with a specific, earned view of what current technology still cannot achieve in speech research.
Ability to make complex technical tradeoffs legible to product, engineering, and executive audiences.

Nice to Have

Experience deploying TTS or generative-audio models at meaningful production scale.
Background in building or substantially scaling a high-performing AI research organization.
Familiarity with sophisticated evaluation systems for generative speech, expressive or multilingual generation, voice cloning and adaptation, or controllable generation.
Recognized external contributions such as publications, open-source projects, patents, or invited talks in speech synthesis, neural audio codecs, speech language models, or multimodal models.
Experience in fast-moving startup or research environments that routinely take models from concept to production.
