Captions is seeking a Product Data Scientist to join the team in Union Square, New York City, to drive product decisions using rigorous data analysis and clear metrics. Role Overview

The Product Data Scientist will embed with either the iOS or web team to collaborate daily with Product, Design, Engineering, and Data Engineering. This role is involved from the early stages of product ideas to define success, evaluate experiments, and transform ambiguous findings into clear, actionable recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

Partner with engineering teams from the planning phase through launch to define hypotheses, core metrics, success criteria, and measurement approaches.
Uncover behavioral patterns, prioritize high-leverage opportunities, recommend actions, and measure real impact.
Design and assess A/B tests alongside other product measurements while setting correct guardrails.
Produce executive dashboards, experiment readouts, and clear decision memos to drive team alignment.
Build statistical and machine learning models to solve core user challenges and improve product experiences.
Develop AI-native tools and automated workflows to boost analytics efficiency and self-service capabilities.

Requirements

A bachelor degree in a quantitative or behavioral field, or equivalent practical experience backed by a strong statistical foundation.
At least three years of experience working in product analytics or product data science for a consumer product team.
High proficiency in SQL alongside Python or R, utilizing libraries such as pandas, NumPy, SciPy, or Tidyverse.
Proven expertise in experimental design, statistical analysis, causal inference, and machine learning applied to product challenges.
Fluency in using AI tools for exploration, analysis, modeling, and debugging outputs.
Excellent communication skills to explain complex data, address uncertainty, and persuade both technical and non-technical partners.

Nice to Have

Experience working with web or iOS analytics, instrumentation, funnels, or release measurements.
Familiarity with dbt, cloud data warehouses, and large event datasets.
Background in applying product analytics to consumer creative software.
History of building reusable AI-driven data science systems, orchestration layers, or automated analysis workflows.
Strong user empathy and an independent, proactive working style.
