Data Science Intern, Algorithms (Summer 2027 - SF/NYC)
About this role
Lyft’s Data Science Team builds mathematical models that underpin the core services of the platform, addressing diverse problems across optimization, prediction, modeling, inference, transportation, and mapping. Interns join this group to tackle complex challenges within specialties like optimization, machine learning, and inference, reporting directly to a Science Manager. Candidates will collaborate with software engineers, product managers, and other cross-functional partners to frame business problems mathematically and write production modeling code.
The role exists to support dynamic marketplace systems, pricing, dispatch, and incentives through rigorous data analysis and experimental design. Successful candidates are current Master's or PhD students in relevant quantitative fields who enjoy solving mathematical problems with data. Anyone who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and brings strong coding skills in Python or related tools will find a good fit here.
What you will do
- Partner with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional teams to frame problems mathematically and within a business context.
- Perform exploratory data analysis to gain a deeper understanding of underlying problems.
- Write production modeling code and collaborate with software engineers to implement algorithms in production.
- Design and run both simulated and live traffic experiments.
- Analyze experimental and observational data, communicate findings through presentations, and facilitate launch decisions.
What you need
- Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in mathematical sciences, economics, data engineering, or a related field with a graduation date between December 2027 and June 2028.
- Available during Summer 2027 for an internship located in New York City.
- Demonstrated experience coding in Python, SQL, or R, along with standard data science libraries.
- Familiarity with experimental design, analysis, and exploratory data analysis.
- Expertise in one of the core specialties: optimization and mathematical modeling, machine learning fundamentals, or probabilistic and statistical modeling.

What is the remote or in-office policy for this internship?
This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule. Team members are expected to work in the New York office 3 days per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
What is the expected pay rate for this position in New York City?
The expected base pay range for this position in the New York City area is $58 to $62 per hour, not inclusive of potential equity, bonus, or benefits.
Who will I report to during the internship?
You will report directly into a Science Manager.
