About this role

Translating complex marketplace dynamics into mathematical models requires advanced statistical reasoning and robust algorithm design. The Lyft Data Science Team tackles diverse problems across optimization, prediction, modeling, inference, transportation, and mapping to support the platform's core services.

Incoming interns focus on specialties like optimization, machine learning, or inference to build predictive tools and decision-making systems. Success in the role calls for graduate students who can bridge abstract mathematical concepts with practical business context alongside engineers and product managers.

Reporting to a Science Manager, the summer intern collaborates across teams to write production-ready code and analyze live traffic experiments. Graduate students pursuing relevant quantitative disciplines with an upcoming graduation window find an environment suited for applying theoretical knowledge to urban transportation challenges.

What you will do

  • Partner with engineers, product managers, and cross-functional teams to frame problems mathematically within a business context.
  • Perform exploratory data analysis to gain a deeper understanding of underlying platform challenges.
  • Write production modeling code and collaborate with software engineers to implement algorithms in production.
  • Design and run both simulated and live traffic experiments to evaluate performance.
  • Analyze experimental and observational data, communicate findings through presentations, and facilitate launch decisions.

What you need

  • Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in a mathematical sciences field, economics, data engineering, or a related discipline with graduation between December 2027 and June 2028.
  • Available during Summer 2027 for an internship located in San Francisco.
  • Experience coding in Python, SQL, or R along with standard data science libraries and machine learning tools.
  • Demonstrated background in experimental design, analysis, and exploratory data analysis.
  • Expertise in at least one specialty area including optimization and mathematical modeling, machine learning fundamentals, or probabilistic and statistical modeling.

Nice to have

  • Experience in marketplace design
  • Ridesharing or transportation industry experience
  • Studying two-sided marketplaces

Benefits

  • Great medical, dental, and vision insurance options
  • Mental health benefits
  • 2 days paid time off and 3 days sick time off
