About this role

Bridging the gap between traditional defence procurement and fast-moving technology development requires a leader who can align incentives between industry and government. Helsing is hiring a Commercial Director in London to devise and implement a strategic engagement framework targeting the National Armaments Director Group and DE&S.

In this capacity, the appointee will shape major UK defence programmes, build robust relationships across procurement bodies, and translate complex regulatory landscapes into actionable business strategies. Success in the role calls for deep familiarity with MoD procurement cycles, credibility within both technical and governmental environments, and the ability to reduce friction in large-scale contracting. Professionals who thrive here possess an established stakeholder network, a background in delivering complex defence initiatives, and a commitment to protecting democratic societies through responsible AI deployment.

What you will do

  • Devise and implement a comprehensive engagement strategy with the National Armaments Director Group and DE&S to secure major UK defence programmes.
  • Build and activate a senior network across UK and allied defence procurement organisations to align requirements and timelines early.
  • Collaborate with Campaign Leads and senior leadership to integrate procurement strategy tightly with commercial objectives.
  • Represent Helsing at senior-level forums, bilateral engagements, and industry events as a credible voice across communities.
  • Develop internal frameworks and guidance that help the organisation navigate MoD procurement cycles effectively.

What you need

  • Demonstrable track record of shaping or delivering major UK defence procurement programmes at a senior level from government or industry.
  • Established network within DE&S, the National Armaments Director Group, or equivalent bodies that can be activated immediately.
  • Experience operating effectively at the interface of government procurement and industry while navigating both cultures with ease.
  • Ability to translate complex procurement landscapes into clear strategic priorities for technical and commercial leadership teams.
  • Prior experience leading or contributing to the development of defence engagement strategies, including stakeholder mapping and relationship management.

Nice to have

  • Experience gained through a secondment in industry, a consulting environment, or another cross-sector role bridging procurement and commercial strategy.
  • Direct experience of transitioning from a senior DE&S or equivalent government procurement role into an industry-facing position.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and VSOP options
  • Relocation support: up to €2,500 and 4 weeks temporary accommodation
  • Learning: €500/£450 yearly allowance
  • Health & wellness: gym membership and mental health support (Nilo.health)
  • Social: regular company events and monthly social allowances
  • Enhanced parental leave and family support options
