About this role

This position suits an experienced automation professional looking to build autonomous factories for aerospace and defense systems. The role is based on site in Torrance, California, with up to 25% travel.

Role Overview

Hadrian Automation seeks an Automation and Robotics System Engineer for Additive Manufacturing to design, deploy, and commission automation for additive manufacturing cell workflows. The professional will own safety architecture, eliminate bottlenecks, and ensure reliability across production lines to help scale the manufacturing footprint.

Key Responsibilities

Design, deploy, and commission automation for additive manufacturing cell workflows, including powder handling, build plate exchange, depowdering, part removal, and downstream logistics.
Own the safety architecture for cell automation, perform risk assessments, and validate systems against aerospace and defense requirements.
Engineer combustible dust controls and inert gas handling practices in coordination with site EHS and materials teams.
Define mechanical, electrical, and data automation interface requirements and partner with the automation team on joint roadmaps.
Execute Factory Acceptance Tests and Site Acceptance Tests, establishing performance criteria for cycle time, throughput, and reliability.
Manage reliability and maintenance programs, including preventive maintenance, spares strategy, and root cause analysis.
Identify and remove automation bottlenecks to maximize build throughput, changeover efficiency, and machine utilization.
Standardize cell automation documentation so solutions transfer seamlessly to new manufacturing sites.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
Minimum of 4 years of experience designing, deploying, and sustaining automation solutions in production manufacturing settings.
Hands-on background with industrial robotics, material handling systems, machine tending automation, and PLC-level cell familiarity.
Competency in machine safety, functional safety design per ISO 12100 and ISO 13849, and safety interlock validation.
Experience commissioning automation equipment and executing structured acceptance testing.
Availability to work on site full time in Torrance, California, along with up to 25% travel to deployment sites and vendors.
Qualification as a U.S. person for ITAR compliance purposes.

Nice to Have

Experience deploying automation in metal additive manufacturing or powder metallurgy environments.
Background with combustible dust and inert atmosphere handling per NFPA 484 standards.
Aerospace or defense production background with safety-critical automation requirements.
Familiarity with collaborative robotics and human-robot interaction safety standards like ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066.
Track record of standing up identical automation solutions across multiple factory sites.
