About this role

The Healthcare Data Strategy team at RA Capital Management builds data-driven systems to inform investment decisions and improve core business processes across portfolio management, risk management, and data science. This practitioner will design and implement AI-driven architectures that convert complex, unstructured healthcare, scientific, and financial data into reliable insights for decision-making. Operating at the intersection of applied artificial intelligence, data science, and investment research, the individual in this hands-on position will translate ambiguous business questions into technical solutions and actionable conclusions while partnering closely with investment professionals. Candidates who thrive in this environment possess a strong background in applied machine learning, enjoy working with intricate domain-specific information, and demonstrate the ability to independently manage projects from initial conception through deployment.

What you will do

  • Design and build systems that transform unstructured healthcare, scientific, and financial information into structured, usable insights.
  • Develop and deploy AI-driven workflows using approaches such as natural language processing, retrieval-augmented generation, knowledge graphs, embeddings, entity extraction, and agentic systems.
  • Own applied artificial intelligence projects from problem definition and prototyping through deployment, evaluation, and iteration.
  • Develop benchmarks and evaluation frameworks to assess accuracy, relevance, reliability, and potential failure modes.
  • Partner with investment professionals and other stakeholders to identify high-value use cases and incorporate findings into investment research and decision-making.
  • Translate complex healthcare, financial, and analytical information into clear narratives, tools, and visualizations for technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Help establish best practices for data quality, testing, documentation, reproducibility, and responsible artificial intelligence use.

What you need

  • Hold a bachelor's or advanced degree in computer science, data science, engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, computational biology, or another related quantitative or technical field.
  • Possess at least 4 years of professional experience in applied machine learning, data science, software engineering, data engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Bring at least 2 years of direct working experience with natural language processing, information-retrieval, or large language model based systems.
  • Demonstrate hands-on technical proficiency with natural language processing workflows, knowledge graphs, vector databases, embedding-based retrieval, entity extraction and linking, retrieval-augmented generation, or agentic artificial intelligence systems.
  • Show proven capability in taking artificial intelligence or machine-learning solutions beyond initial prototyping, covering testing, deployment, evaluation, or ongoing improvement.
  • Maintain strong Python and SQL programming skills alongside familiarity with software-engineering practices such as version control, testing, and documentation.
  • Demonstrate authorization to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship or transfer of sponsorship, and reside in Massachusetts or be willing to relocate to work on a hybrid schedule from the Boston office.

Nice to have

  • Experience working with healthcare, life sciences, investment management, financial services, or other complex domain-specific data
  • Familiarity with scientific literature, clinical-trial information, company filings, market research, or other sources relevant to healthcare investing
  • Experience with Spark, PySpark, cloud-based artificial intelligence platforms, or production data pipelines
  • Experience working directly with investment, research, business, or executive stakeholders

Benefits

  • Employer-paid monthly premiums for health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Wellness benefits and programs to support physical and mental well-being
  • Resources and perks that enhance work-life balance and financial security
  • Performance-based bonuses
  • Paid time off and retirement contributions
