Role Overview

Mistral AI is looking for an Applied AI - Forward Deployed Engineer for Defense to join its Solutions team in Paris on a full-time basis. This role is ideal for an experienced machine learning professional with a Master's or PhD who wants to build high-impact, secure artificial intelligence systems for strategic institutions. Candidates must hold French citizenship and meet local requirements for high-level security clearance.

Key Responsibilities

Individually deploy artificial intelligence solutions into production for use cases that carry significant operational and strategic impact.
Build state-of-the-art generative artificial intelligence applications tailored to sovereign institutions and critical infrastructure.
Partner with internal researchers, product teams, and engineers on advanced fine-tuning, large language model implementations, and open-source contributions.
Engage in pre-sales conversations to understand prospective client needs and provide technical guidance on company products.
Help product and science teams refine offerings based on direct user feedback regarding security, performance, and compliance.

Requirements

Hold a Master's degree or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or a closely related academic field.
Bring a minimum of two years of professional experience working in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Demonstrate a proven history of leading teams to successfully deliver complex artificial intelligence projects from the prototyping phase all the way to production.
Possess deep technical expertise in advanced retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning large language models, agentic systems, and deploying natural language processing applications at scale.
Exhibit strong software engineering capabilities, including system architecture, API design, and backend or full-stack development.
Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive stakeholders, with full professional fluency in English.
Meet mandatory security criteria, including holding citizenship in France and qualifying for high-level security clearance.

Nice to Have

Previous practical experience working with React or alternative frontend web frameworks.
Background utilizing deep learning specifically within PyTorch.
Prior contributions made to open-source software projects within the large language model or artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Experience working in customer-facing professional roles focused on driving enterprise artificial intelligence adoption.
