About this role

This position suits software professionals with production engineering experience who want to build agentic workflows and intelligence products in San Francisco. The Applied AI Engineer (Product) role at matter-intelligence involves transforming physics-informed models, ultraspectral data, and general-purpose artificial intelligence into secure intelligence products for customers.

Role Overview

Matter-intelligence seeks an Applied AI Engineer (Product) for an onsite position in San Francisco. Reporting to Ignacio Cases Martin, this individual contributor position focuses on building agentic workflows, tool integrations, and human-in-the-loop experiences that assist customers in making operational decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Construct production workflows combining physics-informed models, large language models, vision language models, world models, scientific code, data services, and deterministic rules.
Engineer durable execution handling state, planning, model routing, retrieval, memory, tool use, retries, timeouts, checkpoints, human approval, and recovery.
Generate evidence-backed outputs separating source data, model inference, system synthesis, user input, and uncertainty.
Collaborate with product and design teams to construct workflows for review, correction, comparison, approval, reporting, and recovery.
Establish context, retrieval, memory, and indexing patterns adhering to permissions, freshness, versioning, retention, and evidence lineage.
Measure system performance regarding task success, groundedness, scientific validity, safety, latency, cost, and human intervention.

Requirements

Background in developing production artificial intelligence applications, agent systems, workflow engines, backend services, or complex software products.
Engineering capabilities covering APIs, stateful services, databases, asynchronous execution, testing, debugging, and production operation.
Practical familiarity with large language models, multimodal systems, retrieval, memory, tool use, model routing, structured generation, and failure modes.
Product judgment connecting technical design choices to user decisions and workflows.
Experience designing systems incorporating security, permissions, data isolation, auditability, or human-approval protocols.
Compliance with ITAR regulations as a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or eligibility to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with scientific, geospatial, industrial, defense, autonomy, or high-consequence intelligence systems.
Background developing multimodal applications integrating imagery, maps, time series, documents, structured data, or sensor streams.
Experience with agent evaluation, constrained generation, program synthesis, durable workflow systems, or mixed cloud and edge architectures.
Collaboration history with product and design teams to deliver customer-facing capabilities.
