About this role

Matter Intelligence is seeking an Agent Infrastructure Engineer in San Francisco to build production systems that power physical-world intelligence. This onsite individual contributor role suits software engineers experienced in applied artificial intelligence platforms and distributed systems.

Role Overview

The Agent Infrastructure Engineer reports to Ignacio Cases Martin and works directly on the core machinery that transforms general-purpose and physics-informed artificial intelligence into secure, evidence-backed actions. The position involves collaborating with research, product, design, evaluation, and platform teams to establish robust execution frameworks for multimodal models.

Key Responsibilities

Construct and maintain production agent runtimes integrating large language models, vision-language models, world models, scientific applications, and deterministic rules through reliable interfaces.
Architect durable execution pipelines encompassing state management, planning, tool selection, error retries, checkpoints, and human review gates.
Implement retrieval-augmented generation, memory storage, and indexing mechanisms adhering to strict security, version control, and data provenance rules.
Deliver transparent outputs that clearly separate raw data, model inferences, user inputs, and system syntheses.
Incorporate continuous monitoring for task performance, scientific validity, safety margins, latency, and operational costs.

Requirements

Professional background in developing production agent infrastructure, distributed architectures, or applied intelligence platforms.
Solid software engineering abilities covering stateful microservices, database management, asynchronous operations, and system debugging.
Practical familiarity with multimodal systems, structured generation, memory layers, model routing, and agent failure modes.
Demonstrated capability in implementing data isolation, strict permissions, and audit trails.
Effective communication skills for explaining complex system behaviors to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have

Background in scientific, defense, geospatial, autonomy, or high-consequence intelligence domains.
Practice building multimodal applications processing imagery, time series, maps, documents, or sensor streams.
Exposure to agent evaluation frameworks, reinforcement learning, or constrained decoding techniques.
Knowledge of edge computing, local model deployment, or hybrid cloud architectures.
