About this role

Role Overview

The AI Researcher - Robot Learning role at 1X in San Carlos, CA involves owning the end-to-end reinforcement learning pipeline to train humanoid robots for real-world home environments. This full-time position suits experienced robotics professionals who want to develop practical, safe motion and manipulation skills for physical robots shipping to customers.

Key Responsibilities

Own the full reinforcement learning pipeline from algorithm development through production deployment for manipulation and locomotion tasks.
Advance sim-to-real transfer techniques to narrow the performance gap between simulation training and real-world behavior.
Build robust training and evaluation infrastructure featuring standardized benchmarks and automated regression detection.
Partner closely with hardware, controls, data, and QA teams to successfully ship reinforcement learning-trained skills to customer sites.
Train and deploy reinforcement learning policies measured by actual field task success rates rather than simulation benchmarks alone.

Requirements

Strong programming skills in Python and/or C++ with experience handling large codebases and build tools such as Bazel.
Proficiency utilizing PyTorch for reinforcement learning policy training and experimentation.
Hands-on practical experience using simulation platforms like Isaac Sim or MuJoCo for large-scale policy training.
Demonstrated background in training reinforcement learning policies for physical manipulation or locomotion tasks, including addressing sim-to-real challenges.

Nice to Have

Experience working with model-based reinforcement learning or world-model-guided policy learning to enhance sample efficiency.
Familiarity with imitation learning methods like behavior cloning, GAIL, or IQL to bootstrap or complement reinforcement learning.
Proven background deploying reinforcement learning-trained policies to physical robots within production environments, including monitoring and failure analysis.
Subject matter expertise in legged locomotion, dexterous manipulation, or contact-rich control for physical hardware systems.
