About this role

Hilbert seeks an AI Engineer - Core in San Francisco to build production-grade agentic demand intelligence systems. This role suits an experienced engineer who thrives in startup environments and wants to own critical parts of the core AI architecture.

Role Overview

Hilbert is hiring an AI Engineer - Core to work on a demand intelligence platform in San Francisco. The position involves designing agent architectures, building evaluation systems, and optimizing the trade-offs between accuracy, latency, and cost. The team values hands-on ownership from prototyping to production operations.

Key Responsibilities

Own the evaluation layer for agents, including harnesses, metrics, golden datasets, regression gates, and human-in-the-loop review.
Architect and implement agent workflows using LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent frameworks, covering state memory, routing, and recovery paths.
Operate systems in production by handling tracing, monitoring, latency, cost-per-task budgeting, and on-call duties.
Diagnose production failures such as hallucinations, tool misuse, and retrieval misses to implement durable fixes and tests.
Set technical standards for agent work, review designs, and define patterns for the team.
Collaborate closely with the founding team and cross-functional partners to communicate technical decisions.

Requirements

4+ years of production software engineering experience spanning APIs, services, and data infrastructure.
2+ years building LLM or agent systems that shipped to production and served real users.
Hands-on experience with LangChain, LangGraph, or equivalent agent and orchestration frameworks.
Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to take ownership, navigate ambiguity, and move at startup speed.

Nice to Have

Depth in retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) covering hybrid and graph retrieval, chunking, embedding, ranking, and grounding.
Experience with LLM observability tools such as Langfuse or OpenTelemetry, alongside cost and latency optimization.
Familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP), tool-calling frameworks, structured output, and constrained decoding.
Background working at early-stage startups or high-growth environments.
