About this role

Financial Solutions & Resources for Self seeks an AI Data Engineer to oversee and scale the data platform supporting reporting, analytics, and artificial intelligence initiatives. This full-time position operates on a hybrid schedule out of San Francisco with remote flexibility, perfectly suited for an experienced professional with a strong background in building production-grade data systems.

Role Overview

The AI Data Engineer will design, build, and maintain robust data pipelines that transfer information from third-party systems, financial applications, and core product databases directly into the BigQuery warehouse. This role involves modeling information into reliable, well-documented tables while establishing essential engineering standards to ensure platform trustworthiness. Working within the engineering department, this team member collaborates closely with business stakeholders, analysts, and product engineers across Go-to-Market, Finance, and Operations teams.

Key Responsibilities

Create, launch, and support scalable batch and event-driven data pipelines utilizing custom Python loaders, managed connectors like Fivetran, and orchestration tooling to ingest data into BigQuery.
Design and implement analytical and dimensional data models within dbt, establishing a clear layered architecture that features explicit documentation, naming conventions, and grain.
Ensure high data reliability and quality by deploying pipeline testing, monitoring, alerting, data contracts, and managing incident triage to root causes.
Manage warehouse spend and query performance by tuning clustering, partitioning, and resource costs as data volumes expand.
Define best practices for infrastructure-as-code, code reviews, version control, and CI/CD while authoring comprehensive system runbooks.
Implement strict data retention rules, PII handling protocols, and access controls in partnership with legal and security teams.
Build semantic layers, metric definitions, and robust documentation that allow internal agents and LLM-based tools to query the warehouse reliably.
Partner with product engineers on change management and source schema design while helping stakeholders build self-serve reporting in Metabase.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional background working in data engineering, analytics engineering, or related functions, ideally within fintech or B2B SaaS organizations.
Expert-level SQL capabilities paired with strong Python programming skills for pipeline and tool creation.
Production-level familiarity with cloud data warehouses (BigQuery preferred), transformation tools like dbt, ingestion software like Fivetran, and workflow orchestrators such as Airflow.
Comprehensive understanding of dimensional modeling, warehouse architecture layers, and schema design principles.
Demonstrated background in operating data observability, lineage, alerting, and testing frameworks in production environments.
Fluency in engineering fundamentals including git workflows, CI/CD, code reviews, and infrastructure-as-code.

Nice to Have

Background working with streaming or event data technologies like Kafka or Pub/Sub alongside product analytics tools such as Amplitude.
Practical knowledge of Google Cloud Platform infrastructure and Terraform.
Experience utilizing observability solutions including Datadog.
Exposure to handling financial, payroll, tax, or accounting data correctness.
Prior work building semantic layers, metric stores, or supporting LLM evaluations and AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code.
