About this role

This role suits an experienced applied computer vision or multimodal machine learning professional who wants to lead technical vision in a hands-on capacity based in San Francisco. The Technical Lead, Multimodal Research position at eventualcomputing involves owning the execution of technical strategies for video understanding and running vision models at petabyte scale.

Role Overview

The Technical Lead, Multimodal Research position is a senior individual contributor role at eventualcomputing located in the SF Mission District office. The person in this position will set the research direction and architectural decisions for multimodal video understanding without direct management responsibilities. This role operates four days per week in the office.

Key Responsibilities

Own the modeling strategy across the platform, determining which model families, representations, and training approaches to invest in, prototype, and retire.
Scale approaches from prototypes into production inference, collaborating with data systems and storage teams on index and loader requirements.
Define evaluation standards, including benchmarks and acceptance criteria for models reaching customers.
Manage the cost curve for understanding by making architecture-level decisions on distillation, cascades, routing, and quantization.
Translate customer research needs into scoped technical programs covering taxonomies, model plans, datasets, and quality instrumentation.

Requirements

Five or more years of experience in applied computer vision or multimodal machine learning.
A PhD or MS in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or applied mathematics with a computer vision or machine learning focus, or a comparable publication or production record.
Depth in modern vision and multimodal modeling such as VLMs, VQA, embeddings, representation learning, detection, tracking, segmentation, and retrieval.
Experience with hands-on training and evaluation of models at scale on real video and sensor data, spanning PyTorch prototyping and inference performance.
Background from a perception or multimodal team at a self-driving, robotics, or Physical AI company, a frontier research lab, or a visual-data company.

Nice to Have

Publications at venues such as CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
Experience building or fine-tuning VLMs or other multimodal foundation models.
Expertise in long-form video, temporal reasoning, embeddings, retrieval, or content-aware indexing at scale.
Experience with multimodal sensor data beyond RGB, including lidar, radar, depth, or simulation output.
Background in evaluation frameworks, labeling taxonomies, large-scale annotation programs, or cluster-wide optimization.
