Role Overview

Dandy seeks a Summer 2027 PhD Research Intern to join the technology department in New York, NY. The intern will work on-site three days per week, engaging with frontier problems in 3D dental prosthetic design, generative modeling, and applied optimization. This role focuses on leveraging cutting-edge machine learning to reshape digital dentistry and advance real-world healthcare technology.

Key Responsibilities

Build and evaluate machine learning models using large and complex datasets, including 3D scans and sensor data.
Explore, design, and implement state-of-the-art machine learning methods encompassing deep learning, generative modeling, and applied optimization.
Solve complex problems in 3D dental prosthetic design by consuming and refining outputs from perception layers and generative AI models.
Collaborate closely with engineers and researchers to enhance existing machine learning pipelines and discover new innovation opportunities.
Participate directly in experiments, build prototypes, and contribute to production-ready solutions for real-world applications.
Learn and apply best practices related to MLOps, applied research, and model evaluation.

Requirements

Current enrollment as a PhD student in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Applied Math, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
Strong programming capabilities using Python alongside familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Demonstrated coursework or academic research experience in machine learning, applied AI, or deep learning.
For CAD-focused tasks, a strong technical background paired with a passion for geometric computations, performant graphics, or novel 3D algorithms.
Ability to reliably commute to the Dandy office in New York City three days per week.

Nice to Have

Prior exposure or experience working with large datasets, generative AI, or 3D and vision data.
