About this role
Federato is building an AI-native platform that brings agentic AI to the full insurance policy lifecycle. The engineering team focuses on developing the backend architecture behind emerging agent systems, sitting directly at the intersection of software engineering, data infrastructure, and applied AI.
In this role, the engineer will design and implement systems that power LLM-driven product capabilities, spanning orchestration, tool integration, evaluation, and production deployment. Working across the stack alongside product managers and designers, the individual will help shape how agent systems operate inside real production software and build software that changes how insurance operates.
Ideal candidates are backend engineers with extensive industry experience who enjoy working across multiple layers of the technology stack and navigating ambiguity. Anyone joining will find a fast-paced environment that thinks from first principles and values quick experimentation over mere theory.
What you will do
- Design and implement agent workflows and orchestration systems for AI-powered product features.
- Build backend services that integrate large language models with structured insurance data and platform APIs.
- Develop infrastructure for tooling, context management, and agent execution.
- Contribute to internal frameworks supporting prompt iteration, evaluation, and observability.
- Partner with product and design teams to translate underwriting workflows into AI-enabled product experiences.
- Help define architectural patterns for building reliable AI-native features in production.
- Work across backend systems, data infrastructure, and product integrations to ship user-facing capabilities.
What you need
- Ten or more years of experience in backend engineering, data engineering, or related technical roles.
- Strong background building production backend systems and application programming interfaces.
- Professional experience working with large language models, agent systems, or generative artificial intelligence applications.
- Hands-on experience involving prompt design, tool-based agent architectures, or language model workflows.
- Proficiency in Python or similar backend programming languages.
- Experience working with cloud infrastructure and distributed systems.
- Comfort navigating ambiguity and working across layers of the stack from infrastructure to product integration.
Nice to have
- Experience building production systems involving LLMs, agents, or prompt pipelines
- Experience designing internal platforms or developer tooling
- Familiarity with insurance, fintech, or B2B SaaS
