This remote Staff Data Engineer position at MyFitnessPal involves designing and maintaining core data platform components, making it ideal for experienced engineers passionate about health and wellness infrastructure. Operating within a collaborative data science environment, this role directly influences backend systems that power millions of user health journeys daily.

Role Overview

MyFitnessPal is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join the data engineering team on a remote basis within the United States. In this role, you will design, build, and maintain high-throughput, event-driven data services while championing DataOps best practices across the organization. You will play a critical part in evolving core platform components, modernizing legacy pipelines, and driving technical leadership in agentic development maturity.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and maintain high-throughput, event-driven data services and orchestration pipelines using Python, Airflow, and Snowflake.
Architect and evolve core platform components to ensure scalable, secure, and extensible data pipelines, including modernizing legacy ingestion patterns with CDC and Kafka event streaming.
Collaborate on the development and adoption of DataOps best practices like data modeling, CI/CD, unit testing, and validation frameworks.
Define and evangelize data engineering standards, review work for other engineers, and provide implementation guidance.
Advance team agentic development maturity by increasing recurring engineering work handled by agents while maintaining safe AI usage guardrails.
Shape data governance strategy, ensuring safe and consistent data access for tools and AI assistants.
Manage cost efficiency for Snowflake and pipeline infrastructure, balancing performance and reliability.
Mentor data and analytics engineers to foster technical growth and resilient system design.
Lead cross-functional initiatives spanning infrastructure, data services, and observability.
Build and maintain secure, compliant, and well-governed data systems utilizing role-based access controls and data lifecycle management.

Requirements

8 to 12+ years of total engineering experience, including 3 to 5+ years in data engineering at a senior, architect, or staff level.
Extensive hands-on experience with Snowflake or similar data stores.
Experience working with distributed and non-distributed, structured and unstructured data stores such as RDS, MySQL, MongoDB, DynamoDB, Redis, and S3.
Advanced SQL skills with a proven ability to write and optimize complex queries against large-scale, high-cardinality datasets.
Extensive experience with Airflow or comparable orchestration tools.
Demonstrated background writing high-throughput services in Python.
Experience building high-volume, event-driven architectures involving change-data-capture (CDC) and distributed event streaming like Kafka.
Familiarity with various API design patterns including REST and SOAP.
Strong DataOps background covering modeling, CI/CD pipelines, source control, and unit testing frameworks.
Experience implementing infrastructure-as-code using tools like Terraform.
Track record of defining and driving engineering standards adopted across an organization.

Nice to Have

Experience with modular modeling via dbt and deploying semantic layer best practices.
Familiarity with dataset versioning, CI enforcement, and high-velocity experimentation organizations.
