Role Overview

AnswersNow is seeking a remote Staff Cloud Security Engineer anywhere in the US to act as the single owner of security across the platform, infrastructure, and corporate environment. Operating with significant autonomy, this role sets the security strategy, builds the program, handles hands-on execution, and partners directly with the CTO and engineering team.

Key Responsibilities

Architect, secure, and harden the AWS environment, serverless and data layers, EKS infrastructure, and APIs while embedding security into the SDLC and securing real-time video platforms.
Establish AI usage policies, secure in-product AI/ML capabilities against OWASP LLM Top 10 vulnerabilities, enforce data privacy guardrails, and monitor AI workflows.
Own the path to SOC 2 Type I and Type II compliance, ongoing HIPAA Security Rule compliance, Vanta automation, security policies, and vendor risk management.
Manage corporate endpoint security with outsourced IT, own identity and access management, and coordinate security awareness and HIPAA training.
Build logging, monitoring, and alerting systems, develop and test incident response plans, lead incident management, and partner on disaster recovery.
Define the security roadmap, communicate risk to executives, mentor engineers, and build a security-conscious culture.

Requirements

Minimum of 8 years in security engineering with hands-on experience securing production cloud environments, particularly AWS.
Deep expertise in AWS security, PostgreSQL data stores, application and API security, and code and architecture reviews.
Direct experience leading SOC 2 audits (Type I or II) and HIPAA compliance within healthcare or health-tech environments.
Practical background in Infrastructure-as-Code, CI/CD security, AI security, LLM application security, and incident response.
Excellent communication skills to explain risk to engineers, executives, auditors, and customers.

Nice to Have

Experience with compliance automation platforms such as Vanta, Drata, or Secureframe.
Experience securing real-time communication or video platforms like WebRTC.
Familiarity with HITRUST, ISO 27001, or NIST frameworks.
Background at a startup or scale-up building a security program from scratch.
Relevant certifications including AWS Security Specialty, CISSP, CCSP, or OSCP.
Experience with pediatric or behavioral health data and minors' information privacy.
