Apaleo is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer (.NET) to join the platform team in Munich or remotely. This high-ownership role suits an autonomous technical leader with extensive backend experience who wants to shape the future of API-first hospitality technology.

Role Overview

As a Staff Backend Engineer, you will operate as an individual contributor within the Platform team, working closely with the Principal Engineer. You will own infrastructure, developer experience, and security foundations across the engineering organization. Instead of working from a groomed backlog, you will take full ownership of large, ambiguous initiatives, identifying problems and driving them from initial analysis to completion with complete autonomy.

Key Responsibilities

Architect, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable backend systems.
Self-identify and scope problems, assessing impact, timing, and prioritization independently.
Lead architectural decisions and design discussions while fostering cross-team alignment.
Drive large, ambiguous initiatives end-to-end and mentor engineers to champion technical excellence.
Build internal tools and infrastructure to help teams deliver code more quickly and reliably.
Manage observability, logging, and operational excellence to maintain high platform availability.
Participate in on-call rotations and serve as a reliable problem solver during technical incidents.
Spot opportunities where AI and automation can drive meaningful technical improvements.

Requirements

Bring 8+ years of backend development experience, including several years in a staff-level or technical leadership role.
Possess strong engineering fundamentals that transfer seamlessly across languages and cloud platforms.
Demonstrate a clear track record of owning large technical initiatives from ambiguity to completion on platform or infrastructure teams.
Show experience designing and scaling distributed systems in cloud-native environments, preferably AWS or strong Azure fundamentals with enthusiasm for switching.
Be comfortable working with containerized services and infrastructure-as-code tools.
Write your own unit and integration tests independently.
Communicate fluently in English.

Nice to Have

Direct experience working with C# (.NET), PostgreSQL, AWS, and ECS or Kubernetes.
Practical background setting up infrastructure-as-code from scratch using Terraform, including migrations from CloudFormation.
Experience utilizing Kafka or other event-driven and streaming systems like Azure Service Bus.
Hands-on familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and a strong interest in AI-driven engineering.
Excellent collaboration skills for introducing new technology and tooling to diverse teams.
