Role Overview
The Staff Backend Engineer, AI Systems role at Mural is a remote position based in the United States focused on creating scalable backend platforms for generative AI collaboration. This position suits an experienced software professional with a strong background in distributed systems and a desire to shape the future of visual decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
Build core backend systems powering the agent platform, covering orchestration, durable execution, tool execution, memory, observability, and evaluation infrastructure.
Design scalable services and APIs allowing AI agents to retrieve context, coordinate multi-step workflows, interact with company data, and act on behalf of users.
Develop the agent memory layer, managing conversation and product context, retrieval, summarization, compaction, and long-term storage.
Create infrastructure to monitor, debug, and improve agent behavior using traces, metrics, feedback loops, and offline evaluation.
Translate open-ended product goals into clear backend architectures, data models, and implementation plans.
Shape the technical direction for agentic AI through long-term architecture, strategy, and engineering best practices.
Support team growth by mentoring colleagues, assisting with hiring, and fostering a collaborative culture.
Requirements
Seven or more years of software engineering experience building and operating reliable production systems, scalable services, APIs, and system architectures.
Practical experience designing and operating distributed systems for complex workflows, such as orchestration, asynchronous processing, job execution, retries, event-driven architectures, and failure recovery.
Familiarity with artificial intelligence, large language models, or agentic systems like tool use, context retrieval, evaluation, or model orchestration.
Strong focus on production quality including observability, reliability, testing, security, maintainability, and incident response.
Strong communication skills to write technical documentation and collaborate across teams.
Experience working full stack or collaborating closely on product-facing frontend experiences.
Nice to Have
Deeper artificial intelligence and machine learning experience, particularly involving large language model evaluation, experimentation, embeddings, and retrieval systems.
Experience with knowledge graphs, graph-based data modeling, entity resolution, or relationship-aware retrieval systems.

Salary and Benefits
Annual salary range of GBP 110,416 to 138,020.
