Staff Android Engineer, In-Car Experience
About this role
Creating reliable Android components and flows using modern technologies like Jetpack Compose forms the core daily routine for this team. Engineers on this group build the user interfaces that customers use to hail and control autonomous vehicles, including Pick Ups and Drop Offs as well as in-car infotainment features like music, games, and maps. Waymo operates as an autonomous driving technology company focused on building the Waymo Driver to improve mobility access and safety.
Candidates joining this group will design and maintain software that controls in-car systems such as displays, audio, and climate controls while solving novel human-computer interaction challenges. The engineering group collaborates closely with UX and UI designers, Product Managers, and Vehicle Software Engineers to launch innovative in-car experiences. What you will do
- Create reliable Android components and flows using modern technologies like Jetpack Compose.
- Build features within the in-car interface that inspire trust and clearly communicate the vehicle's intentions.
- Work closely with UX and UI designers, Product Managers, and Vehicle Software Engineers to launch innovative in-car experiences.
- Design and maintain software controlling in-car systems such as displays, audio, and climate controls.
- Manage the full software development lifecycle, focusing on quality and robustness for safety-sensitive systems.
- Lead technical designs and mentor other engineers on the team.
What you need
- Hold a BS degree in Computer Science or have equivalent practical experience.
- Bring 7 or more years of professional software development experience.
- Demonstrate 3 or more years of experience in Android application development, including testing, maintaining, and launching features.
- Show a proven ability to design and implement significant features or components independently.
- Possess proficiency in Kotlin or Java alongside a strong understanding of Android internals.
Nice to have
- Experience with Android platform (AOSP) development, custom Android builds, or embedded systems.
- A passion for pixel-perfect UI and creating fluid user experiences.
- Knowledge of in-car infotainment systems or automotive software development.
- Experience with performance analysis and optimization for resource-constrained devices.
- Full-stack experience, including designing and integrating with server-side APIs to support client features.

What is the salary range for the position?
The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is $251,000 to $310,000 USD. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
