About this role

The Sr. R&D Engineer position at Pointr is a full-time remote or Istanbul office-based role focused on advancing indoor and outdoor positioning algorithms for real-world applications. This opportunity suits an experienced software professional with a strong background in estimation, sensor fusion, and algorithmic problem-solving who wants to impact millions of users globally.

Role Overview

Pointr seeks a Sr. R&D Engineer to join the Location team and enhance the positioning engine powering the blue dot offering used in airports, hospitals, and corporate campuses. This engine converts noisy sensor data into accurate location estimates indoors and outdoors, operating primarily across iOS, Android, WebAssembly, and backend services via a shared C++ core. Candidates will guide algorithm improvements from research through implementation, real venue validation, and production deployment. The role involves probabilistic estimation, sensor fusion, and applied geometry, working within a senior team with high ownership and rapid paths to customer deployment.

Key Responsibilities

Enhance the accuracy, responsiveness, and robustness of positioning algorithms across diverse venues, devices, and real-world conditions.
Research, develop, and evaluate classical estimation and machine learning approaches using real venue data.
Investigate emerging positioning technologies, utilizing development kits and reference hardware.
Build and use offline replay, accuracy regression suites, and simulation tools to evaluate performance improvements.
Write production-quality code in the shared C++ engine and native iOS and Android scanning layers, ensuring performance and thread safety.
Translate field issues into reproducible test cases and engine solutions.
Utilize AI coding agents daily for research and development while critically reviewing and validating outputs.
Guide technical decisions through experiments, code reviews, documentation, and invention disclosures.

Requirements

6+ years of professional software engineering experience involving performance-sensitive production code.
Strong grounding in probabilistic state estimation and sensor fusion, including recursive Bayesian filtering and particle methods.
Solid applied mathematics skills in linear algebra, probability, numerical methods, and geometry.
Experience working with noisy real-world sensor time series and isolating causes from recorded traces.
Familiarity with daily use of AI coding agents, including context windows, prompting, and instruction files.
Working knowledge of iOS or Android development to build, test, and debug native platform code.
Comfort with native development tools such as Git, build systems, compilers, sanitizers, and profilers.
Clear technical communication skills and professional fluency in English.

Nice to Have

Experience in indoor positioning, GNSS, robotics, SLAM, pedestrian dead reckoning, or RF signal processing.
Practical experience with Claude Code, OpenAI Codex, or building agent tools.
Familiarity with modern C++, Swift, Kotlin, or shipping shared native cores.
Knowledge of radio technologies like BLE, UWB, or Wi-Fi for ranging and positioning.
Background in computational geometry, geospatial data, map processing, or wayfinding algorithms.
Experience applying machine learning to motion or signal models.
Master's degree or PhD in a relevant scientific or technical field.
