About this role

Cyvl is focused on transforming physical infrastructure management by developing purpose-built sensors, computer vision, and AI solutions. The company creates an Infrastructure Intelligence Platform that provides data on what exists, its location, and its condition, enabling cities to direct work and address issues proactively before failures occur. This technology is significant because it aims to improve public safety, smoother commutes, and the efficient allocation of public funds by leveraging real-world data. The team operates at the intersection of hardware, software, and AI, building solutions that directly impact the physical world and public good.

As a Software Engineering Intern, the focus is on contributing directly to the core systems of the platform. Interns will be involved in building features across the full stack, including user interfaces, backend services, and machine learning models that are deployed into production environments. This provides a direct line of sight to customer impact, allowing interns to learn how to construct scalable, production-grade software within a fast-moving startup setting.

This role is ideal for someone who wants to move beyond theoretical projects and engage with end-to-end product development. It is suited for individuals who are driven by solving tangible, real-world problems and thrive in an environment where ownership is high and learning happens through direct feedback and collaboration with experienced engineers.

What you will do

  • Develop and implement real product features for customers across both frontend and backend systems.
  • Write robust and well-tested code for APIs and services utilizing Python and Supabase.
  • Gain practical experience with cloud tools and standard DevOps workflows.
  • Collaborate closely with designers and product managers to develop features that assist governments in accelerating infrastructure projects.
  • Develop proficiency in using AI coding agents to navigate and contribute to a large production codebase.
  • Participate in regular pairing sessions and thorough code reviews to accelerate personal growth.

What you need

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Possesses strong programming skills, particularly in Python.
  • Should have a foundational understanding of databases and SQL, with experience in Postgres being a plus.
  • Demonstrates comfort working with AI coding agents such as Claude Code or Cursor within a development workflow.
  • Requires an eagerness to learn new technologies and apply them quickly to solve problems.
  • Strong communication abilities are necessary for effective collaboration within a team setting.
  • Must be able to work in person at the Somerville, MA office.

Nice to have

  • Side projects, class projects, or hackathons that showcase full-stack development
  • Familiarity with React
  • Familiarity with Supabase
  • Familiarity with Docker/Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, etc.)
  • Hands-on computer vision experience: image classification, object detection, or segmentation (PyTorch, YOLO, Roboflow, or similar)
  • Experience with messy real-world data (cleaning, labeling, or evaluating model output), not just training on a clean benchmark
  • Interest in geospatial data, 3D mapping technologies, or infrastructure

Benefits

  • $20 – $35 per hour
