Role Overview

Product engineering at Descript involves owning outcomes rather than just closing tickets, allowing professionals to take problems from rough ideas to measured, shipped results. Engineers collaborate closely with product management, design, and engineering peers across specialized teams. These squads include the Editor team focusing on video workflows, Growth and Monetization handling onboarding and user acquisition, Media managing project and rendering pipelines, and AI powering the Underlord co-editor agent.

Key Responsibilities

Own meaningful product surfaces entirely, moving problems from definition through design, implementation, launch, measurement, and maintenance.
Partner with Product and Design teams to propose better user interactions, identify constraints, select appropriate metrics, and find simple paths to user outcomes.
Build ambitious, responsive, and reliable full-stack systems using TypeScript, React, Node.js, and Temporal integrations.
Formulate hypotheses, instrument work, release features incrementally, and review outcomes honestly using data.
Strengthen testing, tooling, code standards, observability, and release processes to maintain high velocity without sacrificing quality.
Provide architectural direction, code reviews, technical mentorship, and clear writing to elevate the engineering team.

Requirements

Bring five or more years of professional experience building and shipping customer-facing products with measurable user or business impact.
Leverage AI agents effectively as a leverage tool and think critically about harnessing artificial intelligence in daily work.
Possess a strong track record of owning features or experiments end-to-end from initial planning through launch and analytics evaluation.
Navigate unfamiliar codebases quickly through exploration and targeted questions.
Display a deep care for software feel, recognizing when technically correct solutions fail the user experience.
Validate work rigorously through logs, tests, focused reproductions, and concrete evidence.

Nice to Have

Prior background building editors, creative tools, media products, or payment systems such as Stripe.
Familiarity with the corporate technology stack including TypeScript, React, Redux, Node.js, API design, Temporal Workflows, and SQL, alongside Rust experience.
Experience building AI agents or experimenting with media-generation models.
Practical background in product experimentation and quantitative analytics.
Understanding of video intricacies such as shaders, graphics rendering, audio-visual effects, and media formats.
