About this role

WindBorne Systems is hiring a Software Engineer for Machine Learning Systems at their Redwood Shores headquarters to maintain and build infrastructure for global weather prediction models. This position suits a curious engineer with production software experience who wants to build reliable tooling for real-time atmospheric data processing and model inference.

Role Overview

WindBorne Systems operates a constellation of smart weather balloons and an AI weather model called WeatherMesh. The engineering team is seeking a software professional to ensure model inference runs continuously, handle real-time data inputs, and develop visualization tooling for internal operations. Prior machine learning experience is not required for this role.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain continuous weather model execution by building operational tooling and automated failure detection mechanisms.
Develop real-time data ingestion pipelines for incoming atmospheric observations while accounting for missing or delayed inputs.
Create visualization interfaces to monitor live data processing and model inference progress, bottlenecks, and error states.

Requirements

Experience managing production software systems after launch, including monitoring, failure handling, and recovery.
Demonstrated ability to build substantial software, solve complex technical problems, and debug multi-system issues.
Capability to design reusable infrastructure and contribute to long-term system planning.
Strong self-motivation, curiosity, and a proactive approach to investigating systems and asking questions.
Proficiency in leveraging AI and agentic tools for coding, exploration, and rapid prototyping while maintaining personal accountability for the output.

Nice to Have

Background in distributed systems, infrastructure, or data pipelines.
Experience working with geospatial systems, scientific computing, or weather data.
Familiarity with PyTorch, GPU computing, or machine learning inference.
