Role Overview

Ema is hiring a Software Engineer, Machine Learning to work in Vancouver, BC. The engineering team focuses on building AI employees that execute complex workflows across enterprise applications like HR, finance, and IT support. Candidates will work across areas such as agent harnesses, post-training, environments and rewards, data engines, retrieval systems, and cost optimization.

Key Responsibilities

Design context, tools, skills, and orchestration for multi-step agents handling documents, slides, images, audio, and video.
Curate trajectories for supervised fine-tuning, optimize preferences, and run reinforcement learning on real agent tasks.
Transform enterprise workflows into reproducible training and evaluation environments with verifiable outcomes.
Mine production agent steps for failures, build curated corpora, and create synthetic data augmentations.
Connect enterprise information with user-level and tenant-level learnings through retrieval, memory, and context graphs.
Define problems, build baselines, run experiments, and oversee serving and integration through deployment and failure analysis.

Requirements

Substantial work in at least one area including agent or tool-use systems, post-training, reward modeling, reinforcement learning environments, retrieval and memory, or evaluation design.
Demonstrated zero-to-one ownership of a system, model, or research project from an ambiguous problem to a working result.
Strong statistical judgment to size experiments, select baselines, and account for task variations.
Production engineering judgment to debug across model and system boundaries into maintainable code.
Commitment to honest measurement and rigorous evaluation.

Nice to Have

Open-model post-training using TRL, veRL, OpenRLHF, or custom loops.
Experience with interactive agent environments or harnesses for software engineering, web, or tool use.
Background in designing systems for complex, long-horizon agent tasks across multiple modalities.
Model serving expertise with vLLM or SGLang, distillation, quantization, or multi-node GPU training.
Practical security experience regarding prompt injection, data governance, or permission boundaries.
