About this role

Developing and deploying imagery access and analysis capabilities forms the core of daily engineering work at Planet. The platform teams build and operate systems that allow customers to browse data catalogs, stream data via tile services, and orchestrate geospatial analysis on major cloud platforms like Google Cloud.

Engineers joining the team will build, deploy, and maintain performant distributed large-scale services and highly available APIs in Go, Java, and Python. The company manages the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, requiring robust systems that process vast amounts of empirical data. Success in the role requires strong collaborative communication to build coworker relationships across international time zones, adherence to site reliability engineering principles, and the ability to work from the Berlin office three days per week in a hybrid setup.

What you will do

  • Build, deploy, and maintain performant, distributed large-scale services and highly available APIs using Go, Java, or Python.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers and cross-functional product managers to align engineering goals and product objectives.
  • Write high-quality, maintainable, observable, and well-documented production code while participating in regular code reviews.
  • Utilize AI tooling throughout the development lifecycle and hold AI-assisted work to the same standard as manually written code.
  • Take ownership of service operations by embracing site reliability engineering culture, measuring performance, and load testing.
  • Create and fine-tune alerts, dashboards, and runbooks while actively responding to incidents as part of a rapid response on-call rotation.

What you need

  • Bring at least 4 years of professional experience in software development within a production environment.
  • Hold a bachelor's degree in a technical field such as computer science or geosciences, or possess equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of software engineering best practices, design methodologies, and Git workflows.
  • Possess familiarity with major cloud platforms such as Google Cloud or AWS, alongside Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Have experience working with diverse data storage systems including relational databases, document stores, and key-value stores.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with geospatial concepts, standards, GeoTIFFs, GeoJSON, and STAC
  • Familiarity with remotely sensed products and associated metadata like ortho-rectified products
  • Experience working with observability platforms such as Grafana

Benefits

  • Paid time off including vacation, holidays, and company-wide days off
  • Employee Wellness Program
  • Home Office Reimbursement
