About this role

Role Overview

fal is hiring a Senior or Staff Software Engineer for Network Infrastructure to work on a fully remote basis within the United States. This position is tailored for experienced professionals with a strong background in production networking who want to shape the backbone of a major generative media platform. Candidates who enjoy tackling complex routing, overlay networking, and Linux performance tuning will find this role a great fit.

Key Responsibilities

Design, construct, test, and run public and private networks supporting both public serverless platforms and custom compute clusters.
Apply artificial intelligence heavily to speed up and automate network provisioning, monitoring, configuration, recovery, and validation.
Handle ASNs, public IP prefixes, and private address spaces through every stage of their lifecycle.
Establish and operate BGP routing, traffic engineering, route policies, filtering, and failover mechanisms.
Integrate Bring Your Own IP (BYOIP) setups by announcing client and organization IP ranges across physical data centers and cloud providers.
Set up private peering arrangements with cloud providers, internet exchanges, partners, data centers, and customers.
Implement overlay and private networks using technologies like IPsec, VXLAN, Tailscale, and WireGuard.
Run DNS networking architectures such as anycast DNS and mDNS.
Optimize the Linux networking stack to maximize throughput, reduce latency, and manage large connection volumes.
Create network diagnostics and observability solutions using logs, metrics, flow data, packet captures, and active probes.
Produce reusable tooling, operational runbooks, clear standards, and documentation.
Partner with internal teams and clients to turn performance, isolation, security, and connectivity needs into robust network architectures.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience building and maintaining production network infrastructure.
Advanced expertise in Linux networking, including routing tables, policy routing, bridges, VLANs, network namespaces, bonding, NAT, firewalling, and conntrack.
Thorough understanding of BGP, covering route selection, convergence, communities, filtering, troubleshooting, and multipath.
Practical background in managing public IP space, ASNs, IPAM, BGP announcements, IRR records, and RPKI/ROAs.
Capability to design private IPv4 and IPv6 address plans while avoiding region or cross-customer conflicts.
Direct production experience with VXLAN overlay networks.
Operational background with IPsec, WireGuard, or Tailscale.
Familiarity with anycast DNS and mDNS.
Practical knowledge of private peering and cloud provider interconnects.
Skill in Linux network performance tuning, including queue disciplines, congestion control, socket buffers, MTU, NIC offloads, IRQ affinity, and RSS/RPS/XPS.
Packet-level debugging abilities utilizing tools like iproute2, tcpdump, tc, ethtool, Wireshark, and mtr.
Proficiency in network configuration automation using Ansible or similar platforms.

Nice to Have

EVPN acting as a VXLAN control plane.
Software-routing platforms like FRRouting or BIRD.
Interconnect tools such as AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, or Google Cloud Interconnect.
Experience with colocation networking, cross-connects, route servers, and internet exchanges.
Background in DDoS mitigation, detection, scrubbing, and BGP-driven traffic diversion.
Knowledge of eBPF, XDP, and DPDK.
Familiarity with NetBox, Nautobot, and Nornir.
Experience running authoritative or recursive DNS infrastructure at scale.
Hardware familiarity with Arista, Juniper, and Cisco network equipment.
Kubernetes networking, CNI, and service load balancing.
Programming capabilities in Python or Go.
