About this role

This Senior Staff Linux Runtime & Drivers role suits an experienced systems software professional with a strong background in accelerator runtime development and a desire to work in San Francisco, the Bay Area, or Pittsburgh, PA. The position involves owning user-mode components that interface with the Fabric architecture and supporting the effcc compiler.

Role Overview

Efficient Computer is seeking a Senior Staff Software Engineer for Linux Runtime & Drivers to join the System Software team. The engineer will own user-mode components, interface with kernel-mode drivers, and define HAL interfaces exposed by the Fabric ABI while working across pre-silicon environments like QEMU, emulation, and FPGAs.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain the user-mode runtime driver for the Fabric accelerator, handling context management, program loading, resource management, command queue submission, and event synchronization.
Build user-mode interfaces connecting the compiler, Fabric ABI, and kernel-mode driver, and define in-memory representations consumed by the Fabric.
Develop runtime library support and interfaces required by third-party machine learning framework backends utilized by PyTorch, ONNX, and TensorFlow.
Lead user-mode bring-up efforts on first silicon utilizing functional simulation, emulation, and FPGA environments.
Establish comprehensive runtime test coverage including API unit tests, regression suites, performance benchmarks, and hardware-in-the-loop validation.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent.
Minimum of 7 years of systems software experience featuring hands-on Linux user-mode driver and language runtime library development for accelerators.
Experience building or contributing to production accelerator runtime software stacks from driver APIs up through user-facing runtime libraries.
Understanding of accelerator memory models such as unified memory systems, allocators, and zero-copy data paths.
Background designing public APIs exposed by runtime libraries focusing on ABI stability, versioning, error models, and thread safety.
Experience collaborating with compiler teams on binary formats, loaders, launch ABIs, and kernel metadata.
Practical experience integrating runtimes with language runtimes or machine learning frameworks.
Familiarity with QEMU, emulation, or simulation environments during pre-silicon development.
Skills in designing kernel-to-user space interfaces involving ABI and HAL design, synchronization, and memory sharing.
Competency in user-mode debugging, crash analysis, sanitizers, tracing, profiling, and race diagnosis along with working knowledge of ARM/AArch64 Linux systems.
Proficiency in C, C++, and Python.

Nice to Have

Experience contributing to CUDA Runtime, ROCm, Tenstorrent runtime, oneAPI Level Zero, OpenCL, or similar stacks.
Familiarity with LLVM or MLIR and compiler handoffs to runtimes.
Knowledge of dataflow, spatial, or novel compute architectures.
Experience on a first-generation silicon product and FPGA prototyping platforms.
