About this role

fal is seeking a Senior or Staff Software Engineer to join its core product systems team in San Francisco. This full-time founding role is ideal for an experienced engineer who wants to own critical backend and product infrastructure in the generative media space.

Role Overview

This is a founding position on a small team responsible for fal's core product systems, which serve as the connected tissue for the entire business. You will own systems dealing with usage, billing, pricing, accounts, access, API keys, and model discovery. Operating on-site in San Francisco, you will join early and take end-to-end ownership—from data model creation through rollout to operational health—designing APIs and product surfaces that both internal teams and customers rely on.

Key Responsibilities

Take immediate ownership of billing and pricing priorities, including metering, usage roll-ups, pricing logic, and customer and admin surfaces.
Design robust APIs, data models, and product contracts that other teams can safely build upon.
Expand ownership over time to include accounts, access and identity, API keys, and model discovery.
Engineer for high correctness and resilience, focusing on sources of truth, idempotency, auditability, permissions, observability, and graceful failure.
Maintain operational health, including participating in on-call duties for the systems you build.
Collaborate across product, infrastructure, finance, revenue, security, and customer-facing teams to transform manual workflows into durable systems.

Requirements

5+ years of professional experience building reliable, production backend systems using Python and/or TypeScript.
Strong expertise in PostgreSQL, covering schema design, complex queries, migrations, and performance.
Demonstrated experience in API and data-model design for complex product or business domains.
Ability to ship product and internal user surfaces utilizing React, Next.js, and TypeScript.
Strong systems judgment regarding sources of truth, idempotency, auditability, permissions, and observability, alongside solid product judgment.
Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-paced, cross-functional environments where product, business logic, and infrastructure overlap.

Nice to Have

Background in usage-based billing, metering, and pricing tools like Stripe, Orb, or Metronome.
Experience with identity and access management, permissions, SSO, API keys, and organizational hierarchies.
Familiarity with developer platforms, model registries, or usage and observability dashboards.
Exposure to generative AI, inference APIs, or other developer-facing AI products.
Experience with Rust, as parts of the tech stack are migrating to it.
