Senior Software Engineer, Mapping Data & Eval
About this role
The Roadgraph team builds the intelligent platform and automated pipelines that create, validate, and scale the high-definition geo knowledge base powering the Waymo Driver. High-definition mapping serves as a foundational pillar enabling autonomous vehicles to navigate safely, smoothly, and reliably across public roads and diverse environments.
This engineer will focus on building applied machine learning models, evaluation engines, and large-scale data infrastructure to transform raw sensor streams into a precise spatial knowledge base. Responsibilities span the complete modeling life cycle from labeling and training to inference and impact measurement in collaboration with onboard engineering groups.
Successful candidates bring strong technical ownership, a background in distributed data processing, and experience with statistical analysis or machine learning evaluation. The role suits engineers who enjoy tackling complex spatial challenges and scaling infrastructure to support expansion into new cities and regions.
What you will do
- Evaluate and launch machine learning models that automatically generate maps from raw data.
- Collaborate with onboard teams to evolve mapping formats for better automation support.
- Apply statistical analysis to validate large-scale system changes.
- Develop backend infrastructure capable of storing and processing diverse forms of map data.
- Scale existing systems to support global mapping initiatives.
What you need
- Hold a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or a similar technical field, or possess equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrate hands-on experience with statistical analysis, experiment design, and quantitative evaluation of machine learning models or data pipelines.
- Build scalable data processing pipelines using distributed frameworks such as Google Data Flow or Apache Beam.
- Show a demonstrated ability to take ownership of complex technical problems from end to end.
- Deliver measurable results while working effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Nice to have
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Vision, or a related quantitative field.
- Experience with high-performance computing, C++ optimization, and large-scale distributed systems architecture.
- Domain familiarity with autonomous vehicles, robotics, high-definition mapping, or GIS and spatial databases.

What is the salary range for this role?
The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is between $213,000 and $263,000 USD. Actual starting pay is based on job-related factors including location, experience, relevant training, education, and skill level.
