About this role
Planet's Platform teams build and operate systems that enable customers to access and analyze daily and high-resolution imagery, alongside derived products like Basemaps. Daily tasks involve developing and deploying imagery access and analysis capabilities using Go, Python, Java, Postgres, and Kubernetes on major cloud platforms like Google Cloud.
Engineers joining the distributed team handle large-scale distributed services and highly-available APIs while collaborating across multiple time zones. Ideal candidates bring strong asynchronous communication habits, a site reliability mindset, and readiness to work from the Ljubljana office three days per week.
What you will do
- Build, deploy, and maintain performant, distributed large-scale services and highly-available APIs in Go, Java, and Python.
- Collaborate with engineers and product managers across cross-functional teams to align goals.
- Write high-quality, maintainable, observable, and well-documented production code while participating in code reviews.
- Incorporate AI tooling throughout the development lifecycle and hold AI-assisted work to high standards.
- Own the operation of APIs and services by embracing Site Reliability Engineering culture and responding to incidents.
- Participate in a rapid response on-call rotation to support internal and external services.
What you need
- Bring six or more years of experience in software development within a production environment working with Python, Java, or Go.
- Hold a bachelor's degree in a technical field like Computer Science or Geosciences, or possess equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of software engineering best practices, development methodologies, and Git workflows.
- Communicate effectively in written and verbal forms to write engineering design proposals and drive collaborative decisions.
- Familiarity with major cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, Docker containers, and Kubernetes deployment.
- Experience working with diverse data storage systems including relational databases, document stores, and key-value stores.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with geospatial concepts and standards such as GeoTIFFs, GeoJSON, and STAC
- Familiarity with remotely sensed products and associated metadata like ortho-rectified products
- Experience working with observability platforms such as Grafana

What is the work location and remote policy for this job?
This is a full-time, hybrid role which will require you to work from the Ljubljana office 3 days per week. The broader team is distributed throughout Europe and North America.
What is the compensation range for this position?
The expected starting gross salary range for this role in Slovenia is €57.700 to €72.100 EUR. Individual placement is determined objectively based on gender-neutral criteria such as skills, qualifications, and professional experience.
