About this role

Role Overview

This Senior Software Engineer position at Tern offers a full-time, remote opportunity based in the United States. The role suits an independent full-stack engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, low-ego environment and wants to reshape the travel agency industry.

Key Responsibilities

Own real product surfaces end to end across squads, including backend data models, Hotwire front end, background jobs, third-party calls, and mobile work.
Partner closely with product and design teams to turn rough, ambiguous problems into shipped features.
Monitor features in production, stay close to support channels, and own bug fixes end to end.
Ship working, tested integration features every single week, broken down into the smallest shippable pieces.
Build abstractions, tooling, and AI-assisted workflows that make future features and integrations faster.
Elevate fellow engineers through code reviews that teach and through early sharing of context.

Requirements

Full-stack range with a track record of owning features across the entire stack, from backend data modeling and business logic to front-end UI.
Real production experience in Ruby on Rails or a comparable MVC framework, knowing both its conventions and when to bend them.
High agency, with the ability to take ambiguous, underspecified problems and drive them to a working outcome independently.
Strong product sense, pushing back on specs when user experiences do not add up.
Reliability instincts that prioritize edge cases, failure modes, and default observability.
Practical, daily use of AI tools to accelerate work while critically questioning their output.

Nice to Have

Specific experience with Hotwire, Turbo, or Stimulus.
Comfort touching third-party integrations when features call for it.
Background working on a small, fast-moving product team where features were owned broadly rather than in narrow slices.
