Role Overview

Babbel Labs seeks a Senior Principal Engineer for AI Content Systems to define and drive the long-term technical direction across multiple teams, products, and domains. This is a hands-on individual contributor role that partners closely with engineering, product, content, and data groups to scale AI capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Define and execute the long-term technical strategy for AI-powered content systems aligned with business goals.
Shape architecture across multiple domains, making key decisions on platforms, tooling, and build-versus-buy approaches.
Design robust frameworks for AI evaluation, governance, observability, security, and operational reliability.
Partner with senior leaders to translate strategic priorities into technical roadmaps and investment decisions.
Identify technical risks, establish engineering standards, and mentor senior and principal engineers.
Lead complex technical initiatives, write code, use coding agents, and unblock delivery challenges.

Requirements

Strong foundation in computational linguistics, natural language processing, or applied linguistics.
Proven success operating at a Senior Principal Engineer level or equivalent scope.
Deep experience designing and operating large-scale distributed systems and platform architectures.
Hands-on experience shipping AI and machine learning systems into production at scale.
Understanding of AI evaluation, governance, security, privacy, and operational risk management.
Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders across multiple organizational levels.

Nice to Have

Advanced degree or professional depth in computational linguistics, natural language processing, or a related field.
Experience building AI-enabled content platforms, educational technology, or knowledge systems.
Familiarity with retrieval systems, RAG architectures, vector databases, agentic workflows, and modern AI application patterns.
Experience establishing AI governance frameworks and operating models at scale.
Experience with AWS-based architectures and cloud-native platforms.
Public technical leadership through conferences, publications, or open-source contributions.
