Senior Infrastructure Solutions Engineer
About this role
Planet operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history, building a revolutionary cloud-based platform that delivers empirical information to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. The Infrastructure Solutions team sits between platform capabilities and the engineering teams who need them, making infrastructure easier to use and ensuring internal systems are not duplicated.
In this role, the engineer will lead hands-on technical engagements with teams that are blocked, undergoing migrations, or adopting the platform for the first time. Responsibilities span diagnosing issues, implementing fixes, creating reference architectures, and designing reusable artifacts that prevent recurring technical hurdles across the organization.
Candidates who thrive in this environment are energized by the success of other engineers, blending strong operator depth in production systems with consulting-adjacent communication skills. The position suits individuals who prefer enabling multiple teams rather than owning a single system outright, and who excel at translating ambiguous requirements into structured engineering outcomes.
What you will do
- Lead end-to-end technical engagements by partnering directly with engineering teams to diagnose, unblock, and resolve complex infrastructure challenges.
- Execute critical migrations by developing reference implementations, tooling, and guidance to transition teams off deprecated systems seamlessly.
- Act as the primary technical contact for new engineering teams onboarding to core platform infrastructure.
- Consolidate disparate solutions into well-supported, paved-road infrastructure offerings.
- Design reusable libraries, Terraform modules, and Helm charts to solve recurring technical patterns across teams.
- Implement instrumentation and attribution tooling to provide visibility into infrastructure cost, usage, and adoption.
- Synthesize engineering feedback and common pain points to influence the broader infrastructure roadmap.
What you need
- Bring 6+ years of professional experience in Platform Engineering, DevOps, or Site Reliability Engineering, including leadership of at least one cross-team project or migration.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
- Demonstrate background in technical enablement, developer experience, or solutions architecture focused on internal developer productivity.
- Possess hands-on experience operating and maintaining production infrastructure environments.
- Show deep expertise with Kubernetes orchestration, including workload optimization and operations.
- Have working knowledge of Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or other public cloud providers regarding compute, storage, quota, and capacity modes.
- Demonstrate experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, Helm, and ArgoCD, alongside CI/CD pipelines.
- Exhibit proficiency in software development using Go or Python, with the ability to translate ambiguous requirements into structured engineering tasks.
Nice to have
- Experience with large-scale block storage operated at fleet scale rather than per-service.
- Experience driving large-scale migrations or deprecations that required buy-in from teams outside your reporting line.
- Experience in a consulting-adjacent engineering role applied to an internal platform.
- Familiarity with workflow orchestration, batch and job-execution systems, or large-scale data processing pipelines.
- Experience defining and measuring platform adoption through developer-productivity instrumentation, NPS, or internal marketshare.
Benefits
- Paid time off including vacation, holidays and company-wide days off
- Employee Wellness Program
- Home Office Reimbursement
- Monthly Phone and Internet Reimbursement
- Tuition Reimbursement and access to LinkedIn Learning
- Equity
