Senior Data Scientist, Experimentation
About this role
Analytical professionals who thrive on solving complex measurement challenges and enabling others will find a strong home in this group. The experimentation team at Tripadvisor shapes how product and engineering units run investigations across various travel brands, focusing heavily on rigorous methodology rather than just executing routine tests.
Day-to-day work involves scaling up experimentation velocity, building metric frameworks, and tackling non-standard measurement scenarios like low-traffic surfaces or competing user demand. The role exists to elevate the overall quality and speed of decision-making without letting short-term wins compromise long-term platform health. Ideal candidates bring deep statistical expertise, strong technical skills in Python and SQL, and a collaborative mindset focused on empowering cross-functional partners.
What you will do
- Own the experimentation and measurement strategy for your specific domain from framing questions to final reviews.
- Develop guidance, tooling, and protocols that elevate the experimentation speed and scientific rigor of partner teams.
- Design complex experiments that go beyond standard A/B testing, covering low-traffic areas, long-horizon outcomes, and unrandomized changes.
- Investigate the underlying reasons behind change outcomes and assess whether results generalize across users and markets.
- Define, operationalize, and improve metric frameworks and sensitivity through variance reduction techniques.
- Standardize analytical processes with automation and AI capabilities while mentoring less experienced data scientists.
What you need
- Extensive background in data science or a comparable quantitative discipline with a history of influencing product organizations.
- Authoritative mastery of experimentation methods including causal inference, Bayesian methods, and variance reduction.
- Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL alongside hands-on statistical modeling and machine learning experience.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and operationalize vital product metrics from scratch.
- Strong cross-functional partnership skills to guide engineering and product groups without direct authority.
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or a related quantitative field.
Nice to have
- Experience with experimentation in a marketplace with user interference and shared supply.
- Background with variance reduction for infrequent or heavy-tailed metrics.
- Familiarity with Bayesian approaches for low-traffic surfaces and pooling evidence.
- Exposure to SaaS experimentation tools such as Statsig, Eppo, or GrowthBook.
- Background in high-scale marketplace, e-commerce, or travel platforms.
