About this role

This remote Senior Data Engineer position at tem is based in the United Kingdom and offers full-time employment within the data department. The role focuses on building and maintaining critical data pipelines to support innovative energy transaction systems.

Role Overview

Data serves as the foundation for tem, where time-series data drives everything from pricing to billing. As a Senior Data Engineer, the candidate will join a four-person Data Service team to take full end-to-end ownership of specific ingestion pipelines and systems. This individual contributor position does not involve people management, allowing the engineer to focus entirely on closing the workload gap and accelerating business capabilities. The role also involves collaborating closely with growing AI initiatives by providing reliable platform foundations.

Key Responsibilities

Design, maintain, and ensure the resilience of end-to-end data ingestion pipelines, handling time-series data and managing clear recovery strategies.
Improve the data platform by addressing the tech debt backlog and optimizing pipelines for performance and cost.
Build robust monitoring and alerting systems to catch issues before they turn into downstream incidents.
Establish and uphold strict data quality checks to help increase the number of data products with defined SLAs from 2 to 10.
Support international business expansion by preparing the platform for new data sources and scaling workloads.

Requirements

Strong proficiency in Python with proven experience building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines.
Demonstrated ability to own data systems end-to-end, covering design, reliability, and resilience beyond just writing pipeline code.
Hands-on experience with either AWS or GCP.
Experience with Terraform.
Excellent communication skills for collaborating with stakeholders, defining SLAs, and explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical audiences.
Strong independent work ethic combined with a collaborative team-player mindset.

Nice to Have

Practical experience handling large-scale time-series data.
Familiarity with modern data stack tools such as Airflow, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, or ClickHouse.
Background working in the energy or climate tech sectors.
Previous experience within high-growth startups or scale-up environments.
A genuine interest in the intersection of AI tooling and data engineering.
