About this role

The day-to-day work for the Senior Assembly, Integration & Test (AI&T) Engineer involves supporting the assembly, integration, and testing of satellites and their subsystems. This role requires the creation and documentation of test equipment, such as automated racks, and authoring and maintaining detailed test procedures while actively participating in troubleshooting efforts during production. Engineers will collaborate closely with system and hardware engineers to define requirements and offer feedback to design engineers regarding test/design for manufacturing processes. A key function is maintaining existing test equipment and leading the development of new test setups and fixtures.

This position exists to ensure the quality and reliability of BlackSky's advanced space-based intelligence platform. The engineer contributes to optimizing test and production quality and efficiency by aiding in process improvement projects focused on streamlining test documentation, configuration control, and integration operations. The role requires a blend of hands-on hardware expertise and collaborative cross-functional communication to ensure that testing aligns precisely with established requirements and schedules.

Candidates who thrive in a hands-on environment, possess meticulous attention to detail, and enjoy solving complex integration challenges would be well-suited for this role. Success in this position depends on the ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet production quality standards for critical hardware assets.

What you will do

  • Responsible for testing satellites and subsystems, which includes designing, developing, and executing test setups, instrumentation, and necessary documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering disciplines and program management to ensure that all tests meet specified requirements, schedules, and quality standards.
  • Maintain existing automated and manual test equipment while leading the development and implementation of new test setups and fixtures.
  • Maintain existing satellite and subsystem test harnessing and lead the development and implementation of new harnessing solutions.
  • Execute satellite-level tests, providing support for troubleshooting efforts and resolving any stoppages encountered during testing.
  • Create detailed work instructions and training documentation for satellite assemblies and subsystems.
  • Assist in process improvement projects aimed at streamlining test documentation, data management, configuration control, and integration operations to enhance quality and efficiency.

What you need

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent professional experience is required.
  • A minimum of three years of hands-on experience in a production environment, ideally with space hardware experience.
  • The candidate must possess the ability to interpret engineering drawings and create harness schematics.
  • Demonstrated experience in integration, end-to-end testing, and operational procedures is necessary.
  • A strong understanding of satellite and satellite subsystems is essential for success in this role.
  • The candidate must be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team to achieve organizational goals.
  • Unwavering attention to detail in a hands-on setting, particularly when working with valuable hardware assets, is a must.
