The Discovery Team at commercetools is building the retrieval layer that powers product discovery for demanding global commerce brands, adapting to a landscape where shoppers type full sentences and AI agents call APIs.
Working across every layer from query understanding to the vector index, the engineer in this position tackles performance, affordability, and semantic search at enterprise scale. Team members design functionalities in a Scala backend, develop multi-tenant architectures, and collaborate closely with product management and DevOps while participating in global on-call rotations.
What you will do
- Design and implement search functionalities within a PaaS ecommerce Scala backend.
- Develop scalable solutions in a multi-tenant architecture.
- Analyze user requirements and collaborate on technical approaches with colleagues.
- Test software components for usability, functionality, and performance.
- Partner closely with Product Management and DevOps teams.
- Participate in on-call rotations for production systems alongside a worldwide distributed team.
What you need
- Bring 5 or more years of professional experience as a Software Engineer working in search.
- Demonstrate hands-on experience building search solutions using engines such as Elasticsearch, Solr, or OpenSearch.
- Maintain an aspiration for continuous self-improvement and learning new technologies and concepts.
- Communicate fluently in English to operate effectively within international teams.
- Possess an AI aptitude driven by curiosity for utilizing AI tools and putting them into practice.
Nice to have
- Experience using modern search stacks and strategies to optimize search relevance including Vector and Hybrid Search, Learning to rank, and Re-ranker
- Experience developing REST APIs and knowledge of scalable event-driven architectures including queues, notification topics, sharding, replication, load balancing, and failover
- Experience working with Scala or other functional programming languages
- Experience with infrastructure work and technologies like Helm, Kubernetes, and Rust
